Simone Massyn's profile

SOUTH AFRICAN STILL LIFE

The brief required a ‘finished’ focused drawing that reflects on my traditions. The composition should include uniquely South African products which I can relate to.

My work reflects on the tradition that was a massive part of my childhood. Every single day after school my grandmother made me this meal: scrambled eggs on a white bread sandwich accompanied with a tall glass of the chocolate flavour Nesquik milk.
The composition consists of my grandmother’s flower-themed plate alongside an egg sandwich, with one missing piece already devoured. Alongside this is the Stork margarine with a used butter knife. This specific margarine is chosen because it is the only “botter”, as we call it, that we ever used, and still use today. Eggshells lay charmingly between the margarine and plate, representing that only one egg was used to create this meal. On the other side is a tall glass of the chocolate flavour Nesquik and a tablespoon covered in Nesquik powder. Both the spoon and the knife features patterns representing the old cutlery my grandmother uses. The background is made up of my handwriting repeatedly writing three words: “ouma”, “oumie”, and “oum”, the three words I call my grandmother in our home language, Afrikaans.

All the elements in this composition contribute to my most memorable tradition that makes up a big part of my life. It is something solely South African and personal to me.
